Bangalore to add 1,000 hotel rooms in six months.

Bangalore, which is facing a severe shortage of hotel accommodation, will be adding another 1,000 rooms in the next six months.

According to Karnataka’s Tourism Secretary I M Vittal Murthy, several hotel projects were coming up in the City after the Government decided to promote hotels and serviced apartments.

The scarcity of hotel accommodation in Bangalore had sent the average room rates of hotels shooting through the roof. The average room rate in the premium hotel segment is presently Rs 13,366 per night, which is among the highest in the world. The average room rate was around Rs 11,280 per night last year, Vittal Murthy said.

The Government began promoting hotels after it was feared that the scarcity of hotel accommodation would only worsen with the increase in business and tourist traffic to Bangalore after the opening of the international airport in the City in less than a year’s time.

Vittal Murthy said the addition of 1,000 rooms in the next six months would bring down the average room rates in Bangalore. Several other three and five star hotels, besides budget hotels will be ready in the next one year.

Providing statistics on the inflow of travellers into Bangalore, Vittal Murthy said the capital of Karnataka, which is home to more than 1,600 Information Technology (IT) companies, accounts for more than half of the business travellers to India – 51 per cent of them land in Bangalore compared to other cities. Also, about 50 per cent of the demand for hotel rooms in Bangalore came from business executives visiting IT and IT-enabled services.
