Hand-held computers for traffic cops in Bangalore

With a large number of vehicle drivers ignoring the notices for payment of penalty levied on them for traffic violations, the Bangalore City police will soon distribute hand-held computers to the traffic cops to track down such habitual offenders.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bangalore, M N Reddi told reporters that all sub inspectors of police, inspectors of police and assistant commissioners of police in the traffic wing of Bangalore police will receive hand-held computers in the about three months.

These electronic gadgets will provide the traffic cops with all the data on vehicle riders, who had been served with notices for traffic rule violations and whether they had complied with the notices by paying the penalty amount. The registration number of the vehicle and the name of the driver will also be available in the hand-held computer’s database.

“After intercepting a vehicle, the police have to only enter the registration number. All the details can easily be accessed”, he said. In case the violator had ignored earlier notices, the police official can levy compounded penalty, order suspension of the driving license or file a charge sheet.

The idea of equipping the traffic cops with hand-held computers was necessary to make the offenders comply with the notices for payment of penalty. “On an average about 2,000 to 2,500 notices relating to traffic rule violations are generated every day in Bangalore. Barely, 25 per cent of them cough up the fine. It is practically impossible for the police to reach out to all the offenders and extract the penalty amount from them”, Reddi said.
