Boy’s heart and kidney operated simultaneously in Bangalore

The doctors at a hospital in the City successfully operated upon a seven-year-old boy for the simultaneous removal of malignant tumour from his kidney as well as the heart.

The patient Ravi, belonging to a poor family from Humbalu village in Hoskote taluk near Bangalore had been diagnosed for left-sided Wilm’s tumour. But, further investigations revealed that the cancer had spread to the boy’s heart also.

Paediatric heart surgeons from speciality hospitals in Bangalore got together to carry out the risky surgery at Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in the City. After a five-hour-long surgery, the doctors were successful in carrying an open-heart surgery to remove the tumour and simultaneously attend to the infected kidney.

Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology C N Manjunath told reporters that Ravi had recovered completely and was ready to be discharged. “This is the first time, at least in Karnataka, that a simultaneous surgery of heart and kidney had been conducted to remove the spread of cancer”, he said. The surgery had been conducted free of cost, he added.
