Four persons of a family drown in lake near Bangalore

In a tragic incident, four persons of a family died after drowning in a lake in Anekal on the outskirts of Bangalore yesterday.

Police said Rafeeq, a mechanic residing in Tannery Road in Bangalore, had been to the lake along with his wife Ayesha and young sons Wasim and Imran.

After the family had their lunch on the banks of lake, Wasim and Imran stepped into the waters to beat the summer heat. As they waded deeper into the lake, they began drowning and shouted for help.

Their father, who was also on the bank of the lake, jumped into the waters to save his drowning children. Their mother Ayesha also followed suit. But, they were neither able to save their children from drowning nor could they save their own lives.

“All the four members of the family were drowned in the lake”, police said.

Locals said the lake had become a veritable death trap in view of the number of instances of drowning in the last couple of months. The brick manufacturers remove large chunks of earth, measuring upto 20 feet from the lake, which made its depth uneven. People, who step into the lake, are drowned when they reach the parts of the lake, where earth had been excavated, according to local villagers.
