Monsoon to hit Karnataka coast by May 31

The south-west monsoon is set to hit the Karnataka coast on May 30 or 31.

“The monsoon, which has been forecast to arrive in Kerala three days earlier than usual on May 29, will touch the Karnataka coast on May 30 or 31”, Director of Meteorological Centre in Bangalore A Muthuchami said.

Though the normal onset of monsoon for Bangalore is June 5, the city will receive monsoon showers by June 3 or 4 this year, before covering the rest of the state between June 10 and 15.

“Monsoon will arrive a couple of days earlier than usual in the state this year”, he said claiming that the forecast has been based on an analysis of the sea surface temperature, intensity of pre-monsoon thundershowers over the peninsula and other parameters.

Meanwhile, the weather has been inconsistent in Bangalore and many parts of the state, which have been receiving intermittent rains over the last two weeks with temperatures varying between 36 degrees and 20 degrees.

According to Meteorological Centre, coastal and south interior Karnataka including Bangalore can expect heavy rain measuring nearly 70 mm over the next two days. “These localized thundershowers are characteristic of pre-monsoon rain and generally occur in the evenings”, an official said.
