Six persons committing suicide in Bangalore everyday

If the alarming trend of suicides in Bangalore is any indication, the Silicon Valley of India could well emerge the suicide capital of the country by recording an average of six suicides every day.

According to National Crime Records Bureau, Bangalore recorded a total of 2,430 suicides during the calendar year 2007 out of which 1,575 were men and 855 were women.

Shockingly, the suicide spree appears to be only continuing with the first two months of 2008 – January and February - accounting for a total of 404 suicides in Bangalore with 262 being men and 142 women.

Suicides had been showing an upward trend since 2005 when an average of four persons were committing suicide in Bangalore every day. During 2006, the figure went up to five per day and rose further to more than six per day during 2007.

During the last few weeks, Bangalore had seen a spate of suicides including the one of 30-year-old software engineer Amit Budhiraj, who hanged himself after smothering his wife to death. Several students have also ended their lives after faring badly in the examinations.
