Government committed to defend quota law - Bharadwaj

The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is committed to defending the Federal law providing for reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in elite educational institutions that had been stayed by the Supreme Court recently.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore after participating in a valedictory camp on mediation organized by the Karnataka High Court, Federal Minister for Law and Justice H R Bharadwaj said the Government will defend with all sincerity the law providing for reservation to the OBCs in elite educational institutions like the IITs and IIMs.

“It is our law and it is our duty to ensure that it is upheld by the Supreme Court. We will defend it with full force and sincerity. The Government has appointed the best of lawyers to defend this law and let me assure you, we are committed and sincere about it”, he said.

On the confrontation between the parliament and the judiciary, Bharadwaj pointed out that a democracy can function well only when each of its different pillars are given full play.
